Food recalls by type of food
FDA food recalls sorted by what was recalled. A recall can belong to more than one food - a salad kit with cheese counts under both.
FDA-regulated foods only. Meat, poultry and processed egg products are recalled by USDA FSIS.
Cheese
Soft and fresh cheeses - queso fresco, brie, ricotta, mozzarella - are among the foods most often recalled for Listeria, which survives refrigeration.
See recallsIce cream
Ice cream, gelato and frozen desserts. Freezing does not kill Listeria, and undeclared nuts or milk in a flavour mix-up are the other recurring cause.
See recallsMilk & dairy
Milk, yogurt, butter, cream and kefir - including raw-milk products and plant-based yogurts.
See recallsEggs
Shell eggs and hard-cooked eggs regulated by FDA, most often recalled for Salmonella. (Processed liquid and frozen egg products are USDA-regulated and not covered here.)
See recallsPeanut butter
Peanut butter and peanut spreads, behind some of the largest Salmonella recalls on record.
See recallsNuts & seeds
Almonds, cashews, walnuts, pistachios, mixed nuts and seeds - recalled for Salmonella, aflatoxin and undeclared allergens.
See recallsChocolate & candy
Chocolate, candy and gummies - often recalled for undeclared milk, peanuts or tree nuts, and occasionally for Salmonella or lead.
See recallsChips & snacks
Potato chips, tortilla chips, crackers, pretzels and popcorn. Undeclared milk and wheat from a seasoning or packaging mix-up are the most common reasons.
See recallsBerries
Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, fresh and frozen - linked to Hepatitis A, norovirus and Listeria.
See recallsFresh fruit
Cantaloupe, mangoes, peaches, apples and other fresh or cut fruit, most often for Salmonella and Listeria.
See recallsLeafy greens & salads
Lettuce, romaine, spinach, kale, bagged salads and herbs - the foods behind many E. coli O157:H7 outbreaks.
See recallsCucumbers
Whole and cut cucumbers and products made with them, recalled in recent years over Salmonella.
See recallsOnions
Whole, diced and sliced onions and products made with them - including the products recalled after the 2020 and 2021 Salmonella outbreaks traced to onions.
See recallsFrozen vegetables
Frozen corn, peas, broccoli, spinach and vegetable mixes, most often recalled for Listeria.
See recallsSeafood & fish
Shrimp, tuna, salmon, crab, oysters and other fish and shellfish - recalled for Salmonella, histamine, botulism risk and undeclared allergens.
See recallsPasta, rice & grains
Pasta, noodles, rice, flour, cereal, oats and granola.
See recallsBread & bakery
Bread, cookies, cakes, muffins, pies, pastries and tortillas - by far the biggest source of undeclared-allergen recalls.
See recallsSpices & seasonings
Cinnamon, paprika, pepper, cumin and seasoning blends - recalled for Salmonella and, in recent years, for lead.
See recallsBaby food & infant formula
Infant formula, baby food and toddler foods - recalled for Cronobacter, Salmonella and heavy metals such as lead.
See recallsDietary supplements
Dietary supplements in capsule, tablet and powder form - including products found to contain hidden prescription drugs.
See recallsJuice & beverages
Juice, bottled water, tea, coffee, kombucha and other drinks.
See recallsSauces, dips & dressings
Salsa, hummus, guacamole, dressings, pesto and sauces.
See recallsSalads, sandwiches & prepared foods
Ready-to-eat sandwiches, wraps, sushi and deli salads such as potato, egg and tuna salad.
