How to check a food recall
Food recalls are specific. A recall rarely covers every package of a product: it names a brand, a size, and the lot numbers, best-by dates or UPC codes that were affected. Searching here finds the recalls that mention a product or company; the recall page then lists those codes so you can compare them with the package in your hand.
If the codes match, the standard advice is the same for almost every recall: do not eat it, and either throw it away or take it back to the store for a refund. For recalls over Listeria, Salmonella or E. coli, also clean the shelf, drawer or container the product touched.
What this search covers
Every food recall in the FDA's weekly enforcement reports, as published through openFDA, back to 2004 - packaged foods, produce, seafood, dairy, dietary supplements and more. Meat, poultry and processed egg products are regulated by the USDA and are recalled through USDA FSIS, so they do not appear here.
